Colombia teenage boy dies from cosmetic surgery, 7th related death in Cali this year

A 17-year-old Cali boy wanted to improve the aesthetics of his buttocks, but ended up dying from the operation, Colombia’s El Tiempo newspaper reported on Wednesday.

For two weeks the family of the late Jose Luis Campo Castañeda had been saving up for cosmetic surgery that would enlarge the size of the young Colombian’s buttocks.

The Cali youth had met a man who said he could help him with the operation if the young boy came to his “office,” located in a house in Villa San Marcos in east Cali.

On Friday of last week Jose Luis Campo went to the self-taught “doctor’s” house after saving up $265 the price for the surgery. The “doctor” injected the boy with a substance of biopolymers used for cosmetic butt injections that health authorities do not endorse.

“The teenager begged his mother to stay with him and not let him die alone”

The substance that Campo was injected with was kept in a soda bottle, and the first shot of anesthesia was not enough, so a second had to be applied. After this second injection, the young Colombian began to bleed.According to El Tiempo, the operation seemed do go wrong from the beginning.

When Campo arrived at his home, he was in bad condition and was immediately rushed to the hospital. Circumstances worsened, and the young boy was brought to a separate clinic where he spent his last days.

On Tuesday, the teenager begged his mother to stay with him and not let him die alone, El Tiempo reported.

The Colombian Society of Plastic Surgery reiterates their recommendation every time a death occurs in Cali due to surgery performed by inexperienced and non-licensed “doctors.” The organization urges people to consider the background of their “doctors” before going under the cosmetic knife or syringe.

“An aesthetic operation is not like going to a beauty salon,” the Colombian Society of Plastic Surgery stated.

The death is the seventh related fatality in Cali this year.

Jessica Cediel encourages new law

In 2012 the Colombian model and TV host Jessica Cediel with her award winning buttocks tried to promote a new law that would regulate plastic surgery practices.

The encouraging of a new law came after a cosmetic surgery in 2011 left her backside “swollen, with black marks.” It was reported that the cause was cheap biopolymer.

According to the medical source, when biopolymer is badly applied, it leads to the accumulation of little lumps, which can cause a lot of pain and can be extremely risky for the health of the patient.
