You cannot strike, Colombia’s labor minister tells health workers

Rafael Pardo

Colombia’s Labor Minister on Tuesday warned health workers who plan to join a national strike in the coming week that laying down their work would be against the law.

“They have declared a strike for the coming week, but we want to inform them that, according to the law, health workers cannot strike,” Labor Minister Rafael Pardo said.

According to Hector Alvis Gaviria, president of the national union of hospital workers, the strike will be in protest against the reform to the health service that “solved nothing.”

The labor minister’s announcement was made just a few days before the planned national strike on Monday, in which the mining, agricultural and coffee-growing sectors are expected to take part as well as students.
