Colombia’s Prosecutor General Thursday ordered a preliminary investigation into Inspector General Alejandro Ordoñez’s allegedly irregular handling of the “Yidispolitica” scandal, reports La F.M.

Prosecutor General Guillermo Mendoza, currently under investigation in the same case, delegated the matter to another prosecutor in the Supreme Court.

Ordoñez is being investigated for his alleged failure to act on evidence in his possession, which led to the acquittal of Protection Minister Diego Palacio and former minister Sabas Pretel de la Vega, currently serving as Colombian ambassador to Italy. Both were accused of offering bribes in the “Yidispolitica” case.

Colombian publication Semana alleged that Ordoñez had altered an investigation into Palacio and Pretel de la Vega handed to him by his predecessor, General Edgardo Maya. According to Ordoñez, there was insufficient evidence to continue the investigation.

The “Yidispolitica” case, refers to the bribery of former Congresswoman Yidis Medina to vote in favour of the 2006 referendum for the re-election of President Alvaro Uribe.

It will be decided in the coming days whether Ordoñez will be called for questioning.
