Yellow alert for Bogotá hospitals

Hospitals in Colombian capital Bogotá are on yellow alert to attend possible emergencies during Holy Week celebrations.

Local health secretary Héctor Sambrano declared the heightened alert Thursday to make sure hospitals are ready when something goes wrong during one of the many gatherings of Catholic worshipers.

Zambrano called on families not to bring young children and pregnant women to the massively attended celebrations.

There will be medical stands close to the places where large amounts of worshipers are expected to gather, to be able to attend any medical problem as swiftly as possible.

The authorities also increased quality checks on shops and vendors selling fish — a food tradionally eaten during the Holy Week — and has seized some 200 kilos of fish already, because of the poor quality.

Zambrano warned Bogotanos not to buy fish that smells bad, looks redder than it should or has flaky skin.
