World Cup optimism sweeps Colombia

Huge optimism engulfed Colombia Tuesday as its national soccer team offers genuine hope of World Cup 2014 qualification following a second victory on the bounce against Chile.

The victory in Santiago followed a resounding 4-0 win over Uruguay the previous week and meant that Colombia climbed to second in the CONMEBOL table, one point behind Argentina.

National newspapers reveled in the success of “Los Cafeteros”, praising the efforts of the players and manager Jose Pekerman.

The leading El Tiempo newspaper commented “the dream of returning to the world is more alive than ever following the 1-3 victory over Chile in Santiago.”

According to newspaper El Espectador “the Colombian national soccer yesterday won three golden points to beat Chile and is now preparing to host Paraguay on 12 October. The illusion of reaching the 2014 World Cup in Brazil increases.”

Meanwhile, Cali newspaper El Pais ran a headline that said: “Monumental Colombia achieved a triumph in Chile”

After the game Pekerman revealed his delight at what has been a perfect week for his team with six points amassed, seven goals scored and just one goal conceded.

“I am happy with the win, the analysis was positive because the team has maintained the trend against Uruguay. We always had a clear idea of ??how to play against Chile and wanted a repeat of the previous game. We knew it was a risk (to play attacking football) but we were determined, the team was confident. Despite going at a disadvantage, I think we did not merit to be losing, we responded and scored the goals. “ said the coach.

Despite the increasing optimism and hope, not only among the players, but in Colombia as a nation, Pekerman still believes that his side must continue to work hard if they are to book their place on the plane to Brazil in two years.

He said “This victory confirms that the team has potential and a lot to give, this was one of the most difficult games considering the heat.

“Our challenge now is to continually work to improve. The players understand this but the win gives us confidence,” concluded the Argentine.

Colombia´s next opponents are Paraguay on October 12.
