Women will be a priority among displaced: Agriculture minister

Colombia’s minister of agriculture promised women that they will be a top priority during land restitution for Colombia’s displaced population, reported Caracol Radio Monday.

Minister of Agriculture Juan Camilo Restrepo said that the highest rates of land disposession are for women in rural parts of Colombia.

“[Women] have priviliges under the Land Restitution Law, and therefore they are a part of the process of recieving land, subsidies, and aid… especially those single mothers or heads of families in the countryside, because it is mostly in these places where the highest rates of land disposession are.”

Restrepo also said that poverty in Colombia has “a woman’s face.”

“Rural women should be the protagonist of rural development; the majority of poor people are concentrated in the rural part of the country, and the poorest of those people are women.”
