Woman convicted for abusing stepdaughter

Colombia News - Child Abuse

A woman has been sent to prison for horrific acts of child abuse that she enacted upon her six-year old stepdaughter, El Espectador reported Friday.

The stepmother from Duitama, in the department of Boyaca, was condemned for having burned the genitalia of her young victim.

She has been sent to Sogamoso prison after being convicted for the crimes of torture and violent sexual abuse, where she will await the announcement of her sentence, which could be up to 15 years.

The latest news comes just days after a referendum calling for life imprisonment for any child molester or murderer was approved in the first round of debates by the First Senate Commission, although the motion still has a long way to go before it even reaches a public vote.
