Police charged a woman from Tunja in north-west Colombia with
aggravated murder after her new born child was found dead wrapped in
blankets and plastic bags on the side of the road Caracol Radio reported Thursday.
The baby was found on May 29. Neighbors alerted police that 25 year old Maria Teresa Alvarado Guevara had been pregnant but no longer was and that her baby had not been seen.
Alvarado Guevara then admitted that she had abandoned the new born baby hours after its birth because her husband did not want another child. She claimed the child was alive when she abandoned it.
Following an autopsy on the newborn it was established that it had died of suffocation.
The mother of three has denied the charge of aggravated murder. If sentenced she could receive 25 to 40 years in jail.
She is currently in the district jail in Sogamoso.
The story is reminiscent of that of a mother of a one-week old baby from the eastern Colombian city of Bucaramanga. She claimed her baby was kidnapped, only later to admit to murdering the child herself.
