Only 16% of works to repair winter rains damage have been completed

According to the Colombian government’s winter rains charity, of the 4,280 works to repair the damage caused, only 15.6% or 668 have been completed, Colombian media reported Wednesday.

Furthermore, at least 200 projects are only 40% completed despite the fact the expected completion date is March 2012, according to newspaper El Espectador.

Colombia Humanitaria, the charity set up to help those affected by the floods and landslides caused by the winter rains, also announced that of the $2.58 billion destined for works to repair the damage of the winter rains, $1.29 billion or 50% was in the hands of contractors.

.According to Caracol Radio, the Offices of Colombia’s Comptroller General and Prosecutor General have given a deadline of December 23 to governors and mayors to hand in progress reports of works being carried out, which are using funds from Colombia Humanitaria.

The comptroller delegated to citizen participation, Felipe Cordoba, said it is important to demand the reports from the regional leaders. Those who do not hand in the reports will face fines of up to $21,000.
