Colombia used to be an almost completely catholic country, with the exception of some indigenous tribes the church hadn’t yet been able to reach. With quite an investment of Christian dollars in the evangelizing of South America, a growing group of people are now calling them self “Cristiano” (= Evangelical).
Exact figures confuse: A 2001 poll by El Tiempo (generally unreliable) says 81 percent of the Colombian people are Roman Catholic. The CIA Factbook (a little more reliable, but without date) says 90 percent of the people are Roman Catholic. 10 percent are “other”.
The number is changing though, a growing groups of people are turning Evangelical and the group of Catholics shrinks.
Unlike the Catholic church, the Evangelical church does have many social and educational programs and has less affiliation with child abuse and corruption.
Obviously this does not make the Evangelical church good and the Catholic church bad. What is bad is being atheist. It is generally not accepted if you’re simply not religious. Bad luck for all you atheist travelers and businessmen. Being atheist is about as close to being satanic as it gets.
To make it easy for the atheist to pretend to be either Catholic or Evangelical we provide a list to decide what religion you lie to be.
