The president of Colombia’s Constitutional Court on Thursday called on the government to create more opportunities for society to discuss ongoing peace talks with rebel group FARC.
Constitutional Court Justice Jorge Ivan Palacio stated that given the “complex situation” in Havana, in which the government and the FARC are locked in peace negotiations, it is necessary to hear the “concerns, demands and sentiments” of the Colombian people.
“It is necessary to provide opportunities for society to reflect on solutions leading to lasting peace in all areas of the conflict” added the president of the constitutional court.
Palacio is wary that peace cannot be achieved by the media alone, and noted that it must be delivered in a variety of forms. It must be a “value of society, a foundation of the state, a constitutional right and a duty of every citizen” according to the justice.
Palacio’s comments arrived just after the end of the 11th round of negotiations in Havana in which the two sides discuss the FARC’s political participation. No accord has been reached on this matter however, with negotiations set to resume on July 22.
