‘We hope we can realize this dream of peace’: Santos

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos on Monday affirmed his government’s objective to “realize this dream of peace” and put an end to the “pain and violence” caused by the country’s armed conflict.

The president stressed the need to learn from mistakes and failures in previous attempts at peace. “We want to put an end to this conflict through agreement and dialogue without repeating the errors of the past,” said Santos on the radio program “En Linea con el Presidente.”

The president told listeners in the northern Atlantico department that the government hoped to define the parameters and logistics of the dialogue with the guerrillas over the next few days.

Representatives of Santos’ government have been involved in “exploratory talks” with the FARC in Cuba to try and bring an end to the 48-year-old armed conflict.
