Wanted ex-DAS Director photographed partying in Panama

Colombia’s former head of national intelligence (DAS), who is wanted by the Colombian government for her role in a wiretapping scandal, was photographed at a party on November 12 in Panama where she had sought asylum.

Former DAS Director Maria Pilar Hurtado was photographed at a Panamanian party wearing a bunny costume with long ears, which blatantly parodied her eavesdropping and wiretapping scandal, according to photographer Daniel Samper Ospina.

Hurtado has been in exile in Panama since last year, and Colombia’s Supreme Court has filed a claim against Panama’s approval of her extradition.

Amid the controversy and the insistance of the Colombian government for her return, Panama’s president and vice president are now in opposition, accusing each other of having dealt with the extradition of Hurtado.

Last week, the Panamanian government said it would consider returning the former intelligence director, but did not issue a formal response to the Colombian Foreign Ministry.

Hurtado is wanted for her alleged participation in a massive wiretapping scandal that spied on numerous government officials, journalists, and opposition leaders.
