Violence against women in Colombia increases

Violence against women in Colombia increased by ten percent, the Inspector General’s Office announced Friday.

According to the report, the main assailant remains the husband with 84 percent of the cases, followed by rape and assault by other members of the family.

In 2008, 49 cases of sexual abuses were reported daily.

The Inspector General said that in the last eight year, 630,000 thousand women were victims of domestic violence, mainly by their husbands.

“The Colombian State still did not manage to guarantee and protect the rights of women to live wihtout violence and discrimination,” the Inspector General said in his report.
