Victims of 9/11 and Colombia’s armed groups unite to share stories

Victims of the 9/11 attack on New York’s twin towers came together with Colombians who have suffered at the hands of the country’s armed groups on Tuesday, in a meeting of mutual understanding and support, reported El Tiempo.

Organized by the Visible Victims Foundation, the meeting involved victims from both countries telling their stories and describing their terrorizing experiences.

The event’s organizer, Diana Sofia Giraldo, explained, “the pain caused by the violation of human dignity is the same in any part of the world.”

“In the way that processes of hurting are the same, so are the processes of healing.”

Colombian victim of paramilitary attack, Imelda Gutierrez, spoke of the benefits of the meeting others with similar experiences to hers, saying, “it resulted in a great understading, which helps us move forward.”

The event was also attended by Khatleen Fox, the director charity group Tuesday’s Children, which was set up to help the victims of the World Trade Center Attack.

She appealed to the Colombian victims, “You must tell your story so that others will understand it. If we come together, they will listen.”

Tuesday’s meeting was held in the Metropolitan Club in Bogota.
