Victims Law to be presented for final round of debates

The Victims Law is ready for the final round of Senate debates, having overcome terminological disputes and received the full backing of the Partido de la U, Colombian media reported.

On Wednesday, party members will present the most recent version of the law, resulting from a Tuesday meeting that took place between President Juan Manuel Santos, Partido de la U members andthe  armed forces, in which all present backed the proposed law.

Senator Roy Barreras, Partido de la U spokesperson, said that, in accord with what has been explained by President Santos, an article will be included that recognizes the violent armed struggle in the country as an internal “armed conflict,” but that this does not constitute the concession of belligerent status to illegal armed groups.

Barreras said that the law will assist 4 million victims of violence.

With the report ready, the law is excpected to be approved in the upcoming weeks.
