Victim of Envigado massacre spoke with US authorities

The drug trafficker “El Morro” may have been killed for fear he was about to surrender to U.S. authorities, local media reported on Sunday.

The most important member of the “Oficina de Envigado” crime syndicate killed in the massacre in Envigado last week had reportedly been in talks with the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), according to local media.

Jorge Perez Marin, alias “El Morro”, who was killed along with numerous other gang members, allegedly had two conversations with the DEA via a relative and drug trafficker known as “Rogelio” who had been extradited to the United States. No details have been released of the outcome of the discussions, but local media suggest that they could have involved a deal in which “El Morro” would hand himself over to U.S. authorities. If true, this would provide a potential motive for other gang members to kill him.

An airline ticket to the United States was also found at the crime scene. Police have not announced to whom it belonged, but a local media source claimed it belonged to a girlfriend of “El Morro,” and was for the night of December 30 or 31.

Initially, police stated that the the massacre in Envigado was committed as part of a battle for control of the Oficina, but they are now also pursuing other lines of investigation.
