Vatican not considering hostage release: ambassador

The Vatican is not considering taking part in the commission that is to
manage the release of six hostages currently held by the FARC because
apparently Bogotá never requested so, Colombia’s ambassador to the Vatican Juan
Gómez Martínez said Thursday.

The ambassador told Caracol Radio that he doesn’t know “why there is such a scandal, because it is just an idea that was mentioned by President Uribe and that could be a possibility. But the direct representative of the Holy Father in Colombia is the Nuncio and the normal conduct, I think, is through him. But here absolutely nothing has happened,”

Gómez added he does not know of any procedure currently being in progress in the Vatican, but added that this could be done through private channels.

“But here, as far as we know, absolutely nothing has happened,” he assured.
