Valle del Cauca elects governor amidst fraud controversy

Colombia’s southwestern Valle del Cauca department elected a new governor Sunday amidst ongoing controversy over alleged electoral fraud.

Unidad Vallecaucana candidate Ubeimar Delgado won the election convincingly of his opponent, Francined Cano of the controversial MIO party.

Valle’s second election in a year was preceded by the arrest of the secretary of MIO and several former electoral officials for allegedly trying to rig the elections.

MIO won the Valle governor elections in October last year with a minor advance over their direct opponent, but was forced to accept a rerun of the elections after authorities established that the party had won the elections through fraud.

Less than 20% of the department’s electorate took part in the governor elections, the sixth in less than five year.
