US court convicts extradited ‘FARC’ leader

An alleged FARC leader is convicted of conspiracy to import thousands of kilograms of cocaine into the United States and is facing a sentence of 10 years to life in prison.

Colombian Ignacio Leal Garcia, captured in April 2009 and extradited to the United States in July 2010 with men other alleged FARC leaders on the same federal indictment, is to be sentenced November 17, according to a news release from the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York. The other four men have already been convicted.

According to prosecutors, Leal Garcia was the leader of a FARC front that controlled a 9,000-square-mile- area of Colombia near the Venezuelan border.

Prosecutors also claim the FARC is responsible for the production and shipment of over half the world’s supply of cocaine and nearly two-thirds of the cocaine imported into the U.S.
