US congratulates Colombia on FARC hostage rescue

A spokesperson from the U.S. Department of State congratulated Colombia on its “magnificent work” in an army operation that saw the liberation of four FARC hostages on Sunday, reported Colombian media on Tuesday.

According to news site EFE, an unidentified official from the U.S. government told reporters “We recognize the magnificent work carried out by the armed forces of Colombia.”

The official referred to the Colombian army’s Operation Chameleon, which on Sunday led to the liberation of four members of the armed forces; General Mendieta, Colonel Murillo, Colonel Donato and Sergeant Arbey Argote, who had spent the last twelve years in FARC captivity.

rescue operation took place in the department of Guaviare and involved some 300 members of Colombia’s army.

Colombian President Alvaro Uribe called the successful rescue mission an “authoritarian humanitarian act” that “gives great hope to the Colombian people.”
