Relations unaffected by Colombia PG’s dismissal: US ambassador

Ambassador to Colombia Michael McKinley said Thursday U.S. will cooperate with Colombia in judicial matters.

The statement from the ambassador came as a response to Prosecutor General Viviane Morales being unseated from office by a Colombian High Court, who ruled, with the support of Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, that she had not been elected properly.

“We have had a strong cooperation for more than a decade with all of the judicial branches in the country and that will continue,” the ambassador said. McKinley added that the U.S. would continue to work on important issues, especially those that mutually benefit the two countries.

Although McKinley confirmed that the U.S. will continue working closely with the Colombia’s prosecuting body after the decision, the ambassador declined to comment specifically on Morales’ dismissal.
