A currently U.S. owned military base on the west coast of Ecuador will become a center for surveillance of the Ecuador-Colombia border.
Fabián Varela, the head of joint command of the Ecuadorian armed forces announced that the base will be used for aerial and maritime border surveillance when the U.S military hands it back to Ecuador in November.
The U.S. base was established in an attempt to control drug trafficking in the area. Ecuador Minister for the Interior Gustavo Jalkh also said that five new police divisions will be constructed in the region.
