US approves Silva as Colombia’s ambassador

by Kirsten Begg August 23, 2010

The U.S. on Monday approved the appointment of former Colombian Defense Minister Gabriel Silva as ambassador to Washington.

The politician will take up the post in October. Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos nominated Silva to the position in late July, but the appointment first had to be approved by the U.S. government.

Among the issues Silva is expected to work on as ambassador will be the U.S. Congress’ approval of the free trade agreement with Colombia, and U.S. aid for the Andean nation’s fight against terrorism and drugs.
