Uribistas want to reconquer Bogotá

Partido de La U, Colombian President Álvaro Uribe’s staunchest ally in
Congress, vows to do everything possible to regain political control over Bogotá.

According to party president Luis Carlos Restrepo, the party will work intensely to reconquer the capital, that is now ruled by fiercely criticized Polo Democrático mayor Samuel Moreno.

“For us Bogotá will be priority. From the national stage we will grant extra attention to the dynamics of the capital and it would be very good if we strengthen a center-left sector within the Partido de La U,” Restrepo told Caracol Radio Sunday.

The former High Commissioner of Peace also announced that members of his party are scrutinizing the work of mayor Moreno.

“One of the very first tasks we will push forward is that I will meet with the councilmen to thoroughly analyze what is happening in Bogotá, where we want to convert ourselves into the big alternative to solve the problems in the city,” Restrepo said.

Current mayor has been criticized by many sectors of Bogotá society because of the increase of insecurity, soaring crime rates, troubles with public transport and the controversial extension of the ‘pico y placa’ system that allows car owners only to use their vehicles on specific days.
