Uribe warns demobilized paramilitaries

Colombian President Álvaro Uribe warned former members of demobilized
paramilitary organization AUC that if they continue committing crimes
they will all be sent to jail. “If we have to put them all in jail, so be it,” he said Friday.

The President, speaking in Barrancabermeja, Santander, ordered local police to immediately jail all those demobilized who break the law.

17,000 former members of the right wing AUC demobilized the past four years. Most of its members avoided jail time by participating in reintegration programs. New insurgent groups that arose from the ashes of the AUC are pressuring these demobilized to take up arms again.
