Colombian President Alvaro Uribe wants the memorial march
celebrating Colombia’s independence to continue despite a bomb attack
on the participants that killed one policeman Wednesday.
Uribe expressed compassion with the family of the deceased official and ordered an increase of security measures on the route the avoid other attacks by illegal armed groups.
The attack was allegedly carried out by guerrillas of Colombia’s second largest guerrilla group ELN.
“Let the program continue, let all that was ordered previously continue and of course let us make an increased effort to protect them of attacks like that of today,” the President said Wednesday evening.
The memorial march, called the Liberators Route, involves 300 members of the armed forces who, on horse, repeat the travels of Simon Bolivar, who called Colombian independence from Spain 199 years ago.
