Uribe to meet Bush this weekend

Colombian President Álvaro Uribe will meet George W. Bush for the last time as
President of the United States this weekend, Colombian Foreign Minister
Jaime Bermúdez announced.

The two presidents scheduled a meeting in Peru during the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.

It will be the last time Uribe will meet with the Bush as U.S. President, who as U.S. Head of State has proven to be one of Colombia’s staunchest allies.

Bush’ successor Barack Obama has expressed criticism about Uribe’s human rights record and, unlike the current Republican President, is not particularly in favor of a free trade agreement between the two countries unless Colombia improves the situation for unionists.

The two Presidents will talk about the pending free trade agreement and the financial crisis, Bermúdez announced Thursday.
