Uribe says son received extortion calls Medina

by Adriaan Alsema June 11, 2008

In the third press release in two days about the subject, Uribe says the former congresswoman, currently in jail for bribery, called his son Tomas three times, saying “something very bad is going to happen” if she wasn’t going to be able to talk to his father.Uribe had already said “someone within his family” received these calls in the second press statement.Medina, from prison, responded with a press statement of her own, denying ever having talked to any member of the Uribe family. In the fourth press statement, responding to the denial, Uribe said his son will testify about the calls before court if asked. In an interview Wednesday with Colombian radiostation La FM, Uribe denied anyone within his staff had offered bribes to the congresswoman.Uribe and some (former) members of the administration are being investigated for allegedly having offered bribes to Medina to change her vote about a constitutional change, needed in 2006 for the immediate re-election of Uribe.
