Uribe meets authorities over FARC threats

by Teresa Welsh October 11, 2010

Colombia news - Alvaro Uribe

Former Colombian President Alvaro Uribe met with government officials Monday  to discuss threats against Uribe found on computer files recovered from slain FARC guerrilla “Mono Jojoy.”

Uribe met with Minister of Defense Rodrigo Rivera and General Oscar Naranjo to get more details on potential FARC attacks on his life. Security for the former president both within the country and while he is traveling internationally has been stepped up due to an alleged order from FARC leaders to “exterminate the former head of state.”

Uribe will also meet tonight with leaders from the political party Partido de la U, created to support the former president. Uribe himself is not offically affiliated with the party, as he is a member of Colombia Democratica, but it is expected that the party will this evening request that he become its official head.

“Until now there have proposals made among ourselves, but I’m sure that today the topic will come up,” said Congressional President and Partido de la U member Armando Benedetti about tonight’s meeting.
