Uribe explicitly rules out third term

Colombian President Álvaro Uribe Saturday explicitly told reporters he has no interest in running for the presidency again when his current term expires in 2010.

Uribe says he has no interest in continuing as president, and that a politician cannot continue indefinitely.

The popular Colombian president was speaking through a translator
with reporters in Berlin after holding talks with German Chancellor
Angela Merkel on Saturday.

He is credited with helping to lower Colombia’s kidnap and murder
rates by crippling the Western Hemisphere’s last leftist rebel army.
But critics say the 56-year-old Uribe turned a blind eye to alliances
between Colombia’s military and right-wing death squads.

Supporters of Uribe had demanded the President to give clarity about his future plans after he refused to either deny or confirm that he would be running for the 2010 presidency. (with AP)
