Uribe defends disgraced ex-minister on Twitter

by Teresa Welsh October 21, 2010

Colombia news - Alvaro Uribe, Twitter

Former President Alvaro Uribe issued a statement Thursday on his Twitter account in support of former Minister of the Interior Sebas Pretelt de la Vega.

Uribe said, “Sabas Pretelt, with a life of service to the country, is worth more than the lie of a criminal.”

On Wedesday Colombia’s inspector general upheld a 12-year public office ban against Pretelt de la Vega. The politician was banned in August from holding public office as a sanction for his part in the “Yidispolitica” scandal, in which he was accused of bribing Congress members including Yidis Medina to support the 2006 re-election of then-President Alvaro Uribe.
