Uribe aims to close National Television Committee

Colombia president Álvaro Uribe is set to make an end to the National Committee of Television (CNTV), he said on Friday.

According to Uribe, the current government has always wanted to eliminate the CNTV from its activities. “When this government started, we have tried to eliminate the CNTV on several occasions. We were unsuccessful,” the President said.

“We will appeal to congress once again, with the proposition to eliminate the CNTV, and that its functions are to be taken over by a technical commission of telecommunication regulation, in an entirely transparent way.

Late last year, the CNTV became the center of hostility when setting its demands for contract extensions for commercial TV channels RCN and Caracol. Since then, investigations from several sides revealed a significant level of corruption among CNTV staff.
