A top UN humanitarian
official will visit Colombia’s Choco region, one of the poorest in this South
American country, local media reported on Monday.
UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs
and Emergency Relief Coordinator, John Holmes, will present a donation of 5
million U.S. dollars to implement anti-poverty projects in the region, UN
officials in Colombia told a local radio station.
“We expect his visit to contribute to a bigger
visibility of Choco,” the officials were quoted as saying.
Holmes will visit vulnerable communities in the
municipalities of Condoto, Istmina, Bebedo and Quibdo, capital of Choco, where
most of its residents are of African origin.
During his three-day visit, Holmes he will also hold
talks with Colombian Interior Minister Fabio Valencia and Director of Disasters
Prevention and Attention Luz Amanda Pulido. (Xinhua)
