United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay called on
Colombia to continue its efforts to purge the armed forces and deliver
results “in the shortest time possible” after the army sacked 27
security officials for killing civilians. The army announced a thorough
reorganization.
The High Commissioner also asked Colombia’s Prosecution to strengthen it’s Human Rights Unit to clarify the allegations as soon as possible.
Colombia Wednesday fired 27 high army officials who were active in the north east of Colombia for their alleged
involvement in the killings of civilians to make the army look more
effective in its battle with illegal armed groups.
Following the purge, the army has begun a reorganization in its command structure. The Armed Forces announced to replace several more high officials in several parts of the country.
The Attorney General is investigating a total of 2,300 members of the armed forces are under investigation for the murder of nearly a 1,000 civilians over the past six years.
