Trucks stopped at Ecuador-Colombia border

Colombia has restricted transportation trucks from entering the country at the Ecuador-Colombia border claiming that the truckers undercut Colombian transportation businesses, RCN Radio reports.

Pedro Aguilar Rodriguez, president of the Colombian Truckers Association, explained that most foreign vehicles do not only transport merchandise from their own country but take jobs within Colombia and effect the interests of Colombian drivers.

“They come loaded with fuel from their country, which is much cheaper than the fuel that is sold in Colombia. Consequently, cargo companies hire them [at a cheaper price] to the detriment of Colombian interests…About 400 trucks enter Colombia on a daily basis,” Aguilar states.

Truckers have petitioned the Colombian government to limit the number of trucks allowed into the country and to put a halt to the increase in fuel prices.

The restrictions affect transportation routes between Ecuador to Venezuela.
