Truckers continue strike after failed meeting

A meeting between the Colombian government and the Colombian Truckers Association (ACC) failed to reach a compromise Wednesday, causing the truckers to continue their strike, W Radio reported Thursday.

The truckers union has demanded a direct dialogue with Transport Minister Germain Cardona, as the previous meeting, which was chaired by Deputy Minister Felipe Targa, failed to yield results.

The president of the ACC, Pedro Antonio Aguilar, said that the meeting “changed the rules of the game” because the government must consult the Superintendency of Ports and Transport as well as Industry and Commerce before a decision is made.

The ACC said that if the Superintendent of Ports and Transports attempts to eliminate the policy of setting minimum freight rates for truckers without the support of the Superintendent of Industry and Commerce, the truckers could file neglect on the part of the government.

The ACC, which represents 180,000 truck drivers, began the strike last Thursday.
