Travelzoo lists Colombia as top destination for 2013

Travel website Travelzoo listed Colombia as one of the top five countries to visit in 2013.

Travelzoo put Colombia in its top five “wow” destinations for 2013, along with Alaska, Ireland, New Zealand and the Niagara falls.

The site notes that the recent surge of interest from big name airlines and hotel chains such as the Hilton and the Marriot is “a sure sign that this South American country has emerged from the shadows of its infamous past.”

The website also noted that “this tourism boom is breeding competition and deals – in a country where the U.S. dollar already goes far,” going on to reference the country “that boasts the tongue-in-cheek tourism tag line: ‘The only risk is wanting to stay’.”

Colombia looks to be an emerging tourism hotspot as it was also awarded the 2012 “Long Haul Up and Coming Destination of the Year” by British Tourism Operators at the World Travel Market in London.

As well as this, northern Colombia picked up attention from National Geographic magazine as one of the “best trips in 2012” for its “Pristine Caribbean beaches.”
