Tolima governor survives bomb attack

Tolima Governor Oscar Barreto survived a bomb attack Friday while traveling through his department.

The attack happened on a visit to the village of Chaparral where the Governor was on his way to carry out an inspection of hydroelectric works. A grenade was thrown at the convoy with which the Governor was traveling, followed by shots fired at the vehicle the politicians was in.

Official reports say none of the bullets were able to penetrate through the steel of the car and Barreto was able to leave the scene unharmed.

According to the Tolima Secretary of Governmeny, the FARC is responsible for the attack, as intelligence agencies already were aware of an attack planned by the leftist rebels.

Colombian President Uribe expressed to be relieved that the Governor was unharmed and promised to send extra troops to the region to increase security.
