Tolima continues battling rains

Tolima authorities continue to be on high alert as the department is struggling to deal with rains and floods.

Heavy rains and a tropical storm hit the department’s capital Ibagué on Wednesday, killing a 20-year-old mother and her son just outside the city.

In Ortega, parts of the town remain flooded after extreme heavy rainfall caused the local river to overflow.

Authorities told Caracol Radio Friday they still have not been able to establish contact with two nearby villages and 8,000 people in the municipality are without water.

The flooding of the Anabá River caused great material destruction, but there has been no report on casualties.

Members of the Red Cross will arrive in Ortega on Saturday to assist authorities in their efforts to aid the local population.
