Violence continues in western Colombia

Heavy combat between FARC guerrilla and the Colombian army continued on Tuesday, leaving 750 people displaced by the violence.

According to Interior Minister German Vargas, the situation in the Cauca department is “complicated.”

The minister was in Cauca to discuss the security situation with mayors from the region following a deadly FARC attack on a town on Monday when rebels killed three soldiers.

Eleven were injured by shrapnel and taken to a nearby hospital. Seven have since been transferred to the closest major city Cali, due to the seriousness of their conditions.

According to local media, upon hearing the explosions local inhabitants left their homes, having previously been warned that the FARC would “take no responsibility for any deaths.”

Some of the displaced began to return to their homes Tuesday, with the assistance of local authorities.
