3 children of Cali cartel boss convicted

Three children of former Cali cartel boss Gilberto Rodriguez Orejula
were sentenced Friday to 50 months and 15 days for creating a network
of front men in order to hide property of their father.

The vedict is the result of a deal struck the Prosecutor General and the three condemned, who accepted the charges and promised to provide information on other members of the network.

Maria Alexandra, Jaime and Humberto Rodriguez Mondragon were arrested in February for not having handed over assets as part of a deal with U.S. anti-narcotics agency DEA. The assets belonged to their father Gilberto Rodriguez and their uncle Miguel Rodriguez who were extradited to the U.S. in 2005.

In May, the three condemned surrendered 73 properties valued at more than 11 billion pesos, around U.S.$ 5 million, as part of an agreement with the Attorney General for lower sentences.

The investigation into the front men network is not yet complete. The Attorney General plans further arrests of network members in the coming days.
