Colombian forward Teofilo Gutierrez is closely followed by a number of English Premier League clubs, with Tottenham Hotspur the latest to declare interest, reported The Daily Mirror on Wednesday.
Gutierrez, 29, has been in superb form so far this season for Argentine giants River Plate, scoring 10 goals in 11 games.
His transfer to Europe has been subject to speculation since last summer after Gutierrez’s impressive display at the World Cup 2014. Liverpool and Southampton both showed interest.
North London-based outfit Tottenham Hotspur are monitoring the situation of the Colombian striker, with Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino disappointed with goal-scoring output of his team this term.
According to reports in England, Tottenham is eyeing a January bid of approximately 9.5 million dollars for Gutierrez. However, it might turn out to be too little for River Plate, as the Buenos Aires club doesn’t want to lose its best forward before the 2015 Copa Libertadores.
However, if Gutierrez decides not to extend his contract, he could leave Argentina for free next summer.
“I hope to finish my spell at River Plate well and go to a big European club afterwards. Hopefully, an offer comes that is good for me and the club,” said “Teo” before the start of 2014/15 season.
Apart from Gutierrez, the North Londoners have set sight on two other potential attacking reinforcements – Patrick Herrmann of Borussia Monchengladbach and Jay Rodriguez of Southampton.
Gutierrez’s inclusion in Colombia’s starting line-up at the World Cup came as a surprise in the light of competition from more renowned strikers, with Bacca of Sevilla, Jackson Martinez of Porto or Ramos of Dortmund all available in Brazil. However, “Teo” proved the naysayers wrong, scoring one, assisting another and contributing with a string of positive displays.
