One of the suspects in a major corruption case involving more than a dozen tax officials, who allegedly embezzled at least $350 million, has been assassinated, a prosecutor in the case said Friday.
Prosecutor Noel Cardenas told Caracol Radio that the victim was the legal representative of one of the companies used by the suspects to file false VAT returns.
The suspected embezzler was found murdered in “strange circumstances,” the prosecutor said.
Authorities have so far arrested 13 government officials who are suspected of being part of a criminal network within tax office DIAN that embezzled the tax revenue.
The corruption scandal is the last in a row of massive government corruption scandals that hit Colombia in the past two years.
