Supreme Court to investigate 14 congressmen for appropriating seized assets

The Supreme Court has opened preliminary investigations against 10 current and four former congressman for their role in the mishandling of assets seized from the drugs trade, Semana reported Wednesday.

The investigations are part of an ongoing scandal that has engulfed the National Narcotics Directorate (DNE), the organization in charge of handling an estimated 70,000 goods seized from drug traffickers.

In recent months it has come to light that employees from the organization had access to assets and may have been appropriating them on behalf of politicians.

Since being appointed head of the DNE in October last year, Juan Carlos Restrepo has tried to eliminate the culture of corruption that had permeated through the organization. Since then, it has been working closely with the U.S. to develop an inventory of seized assets and management controls which will help eliminate corruption.
