Supreme Court investigates politicians linked to ‘El Aleman’

by Sarah Arnio April 17, 2009

Colombia’s Supreme Court will investigate another three congressmen for their alleged ties to demobilized paramilitary group AUC.

The high court announced Friday it will look into the
records of Senator Mario Salomón Nader, and Chocó Representatives Odín Sánchez and
Edgar Ulises Torres.

The three politicians will be investigated over testimonies given by demobilized and extradited paramilitary leader Freddy ‘El Aleman’ Rendón about their alleged support for the AUC.

Herrera named the three congressmen as benefiting from his paramilitary
block in his demobilization statement Thursday.

The court will look into corroborating the allegations to
determine if a formal investigation is necessary.

The Elmer Cardenas block operated in the states of Antioquia
and Chocó under ‘El Aleman’s” rule before it was demobilized in 2006.
