Sub-20: Colombia draw with world champions Argentina

by Jonathan Roorda January 25, 2009

The Colombian Sub-20 team have held world champions Argentina to a
2-2 draw at the 2009 South American Championships in Venezuela.

About 50 seconds had been played in MaturĂn when Marcos Perez scored the opener from about ten meters, giving Colombia an unexpected early lead.

And after 22 minutes, Perez slammed home a second to double the advantage.

But Leandro Velasquez got one back from the edge of the penalty area in the 34th minute and Argentina star Eduardo Salvio headed the equaliser past keeper Vargas in the 52nd.

After the equaliser Colombia remained focused and in fact dominated in the final half hour. Several more chances were created but no more goals were scored.

After two matches in which Colombia did collect four points but showed slow and uninspired play, the match with Argentina certainly was a positive surprise.

The Colombian youngsters play their last group match against hosts Venezuela on Tuesday.
