Southwest Colombia bus accident kills 17, injures 35

Authorities raised the death toll of a traffic accident in the south western department of Cauca to 17, local media reported on Sunday.

A local fire department spokesman told Caracol Radio that the accident happened on Saturday evening when a traditional “chiva” bus fell 50 meters down a ravine.

Most media say 17 people were killed and 35 were injured.

The bus transported a group of evangelicals on their way to a religious event in the town of Caldono.

Recue efforts are made difficult because of heavy rains and reported “public order problems.”
