Grandson of south Colombia mayor killed in attack

Armed men on Thursday killed the grandson of the mayor of a south Colombian town in a failed attempt to kidnap the mayor’s daughter.

According to several media reports, the 16-year old boy died when the group of armed men threw an explosive in to the home of Sandra Toro, daughter of the mayor of Puerto Asis.

According to the local police commissioner, FARC rebels had gone to the house to kidnap Toro, but ended up in a shoot-out with local policemen.

However, in an interview with state radio, Mayor Mauro Toro complained that the police took 30 minutes to arrive despite the police station being no more than three blocks from his daughters house. According to the mayor, local political enemies are behind the attack.

No arrests were made.
