The new U.S. tv series, Modern Family, received stunning ratings and has propelled Colombian model-turned-actress Sofia Vergara into the limelight as a potentially formidable star.
According to newspaper the Miami Herald, Modern Family, which premiered in the U.S. last week to great acclaim is a show about contemporary family life that seeks to challenge the norm.
Sofia Vergara, who plays the Colombian mother married to the older American, told the Herald that the show intends to promote ideas of “accept and respect everyone and try to be happy with our differences” whilst addressing issues such as race and sexuality.
Allegedly Vergara shines in her role, clearly identifying strongly with her character for Vergara is herself a Colombian immigrant with a young son. Her easy sense of humor and vibrant attitudes bring a distincly Latina zest to reality tv.
This is the first time Vergara plays the role of ‘mother’ and she informed the Herald that she and the actor playing her son worked marvellously together.
She stated that the writers created her role because they realised that a Hispanic aspect would bring excitement and flamboyance to the series – not to mention passion and sexual allure! “Latinos have a very different personality which contrasts sharply with Americans” she declared.
Vergara has risen to stardom from humble beginnings, starting out as a model without great aspirations, then gradually accumulating small film and television roles which have grown steadily more profound.
She confirmed that she felt she had matured and evolved as an actress and working on Modern Family had taught her a vast amount.
